If an actor is making commercial movies more often than there comes a time in his life when audience get sick of his usual attitude towards selection of script. Ulahanan is a middle-aged government employee, a man quite used to the boredom of middle age and his life is about home and office. There's no other good reason I can think of. Every actor in here is also terrific in their roles. All in all, the film has enough material to make you laugh and to make you cry. Among the cast, other than Mohanlal, Meena impresses again.
Their combination is great and the same magic which we saw in Drishyam is more or less present here too, with Meena getting more screen time. I have no doubt it would make for quite a story - Whatever were his obstacles, he clearly overcame them. Kudos to casting director Mukesh Chhabra and team. Listen to this song once and you will certainly fall in love with its simplicity. The supporting cast were especially good here, everyone from Riz Ahmed to Forest Whitaker giving it their all. It was his time to return and shut all of his critics. She is so good that when Fatima Sana Sheikh takes over as grown up Geeta, you miss younger one but soon Fatima proves that she has taken the graph far ahead. Another diversion that the makers employ here is the inclusion of Prayaga Martin as Ann Mariya, a pretty woman who hopes to cajole Krishnan to get her a break in films. It also has an engaging music that will certainly grow on you with time. It was released earlier this year. But the film is much more than that. Silence allows the characters, the set-up to settle in the eyes of the audience.
The first half was rather interesting with few good comic sequences and rocking chemistry between the father-son duo of Dulquer and Mukesh being the best part of the narration. Kakkamuttai fame Aishwarya Rajesh did her part well. Talk about passengers of the same stairway to heaven. Also stealing the limelight is newcomer Rajisha Vijayan with her explosive portrayal of a girlfriend.
Music by Pritam and lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya, are integral part of this film. And not to miss the ending sequence where Mohanlal quotes the Bible, a quote remembered by the Malayalam audience for the great storyteller Padmarajan and his classic Namukku Parkan Munthirithoppukal. The makers thought the louder and the more jarring the sound, the more scared the audience would be. Right now, she is gorgeous to look at, but we know that already, and struggling to emote, which has been her bugbear in her last few outings as well. The plot which I will only briefly describe involves a group of rebels attempting to secure the plans to the Death Star, the designer of which, having a morale conscience, built the deliberate flaw The exhaust port which Stewie Darth Vader asked about in Family Guy so that it could be easily destroyed as long as the information fell into the right hands. I have not seen them so well combined since Lord of the Rings.
The cast feels truly international, as any universe should. Each and every scenes of his acting were brilliant and his action sequences need lots of applauds It has already got from audience. He is well-supported by Bolgatty, Siddique, and Kumar, who all add into the humor, as well as the drama towards the end. I don't blame it on them, I blame it on the director who must have asked it from them to make them look funny. I am sure they are good actors but they were absolutely emotionless here. Also, it's not quite common to see novel or short story adaptations in Malayalam and the very latest one which I can recollect is Ranjith's Leela which was, of course, not made for the common audience.
Here the technology enhances the story and the tension and at no time tries to substitute for either. Rajiv Anchal's Guru 1997 and Salim Ahamed's Adaminte Makan Abu 2011 were Malayalam films sent by India as its official entries for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards. Good question, and amply answered by all the heavings and writhings, but, and this is the thing, they are surprisingly tame. The story line is highly predictable though the climax was a good one. Now let's get back to movie.
Mohanlal always plays it safe with directors โ we don't frequently see him associating with debutants or relatively newcomers and this is one factor which differentiates the two big Ms of Malayalam cinema. Let me get this straight this is one of the best movies of year. Aima and Sanoop play their kids. I was not a fan of M Sindhuraj as a scriptwriter and this film doesn't prove me wrong. Gareth Edwards is a director who understands all the combined elements that make a Star Wars Film great. The flirt Venukuttan, played by Anoop Menon advises Ulahanan to get a girlfriend and Neha Saxena's Julie is introduced.
The Ozhukiyozhuki soundtrack is from the movie Oru Cinemaakkaran. No spoilers there, because the plot point is inherent in the film's title: can't get more explicatory than that, can it? You simply start witnessing the journey of Phogat's family. I maybe nitpicking but this keeps happening throughout the entire length of the movie. Hats off to the team behind wresting choreography. It should be unpredictable to the characters as well as the audience or else what is the point. We've been inundated with so many bloated, poorly paced comic book movies that take themselves so seriously that they demand completely unnecessary 150 minute runtimes that we've lost sight of what pure entertainment actually is.
