Brilliantly written and acted i loved the acting and all the characters. Marion Hawthorne was the quintessential mean girl in Harriet the Spy. Meanwhile, anyone over the age of thirteen will probably find it boring. Even when I was like eight or nine when I first saw the film, I never felt bad for Harriet. But fans quickly learned to love George and his heart of gold. Indeed, the whole thing is a meditation on how someone might abstract the world for writing without a mature faculty for abstraction which is to say how a kid would imagine an adult's mind imagining a kid's mind.
But there are multiple annoying things about this movie, but the worst of all is the main character's introduction of herself where she proclaims a passionate stand against good food that looks nice. When the three return home late in the evening, Violetta becomes enraged at Golly for letting Harriet stay out past her curfew, and fires her. Well, I am glad Harriet's nanny, Golly, gave her advice on what to do. This made the rest of the show harder to get into, since I wasn't able to identify with the main character at all. Growing up, this was one of my favorite books to read. It's hard to believe it's been more than 20 years since an 11-year-old girl in a yellow raincoat snuck around town writing down secrets and inspiring 90s tweens everywhere to rock some wide-leg jeans. But her rival Vanessa Morgan is the future prom queen with the popularity to match. After Harriet bids Golly goodbye, she becomes depressed and withdrawn. Normally I like kid shows and enjoy childish funny things. She just threw in something and got credit for it.
